I decided to participate in this year’s #Kaijune–an art challenge where you draw a picture of a kaiju based on a daily prompt throughout June. I am not an artist, though, so I instead used the prompt list as the basis for a daily writing exercise. What started as a method of getting warmed up evolved into a story about an anti-union university, feckless government responses, white nationalist cults, and the perpetual misfortune of graduate students named “Timmy.” I used the 2022 prompt list posted by Alan Cortes (because I decided to do this before he posted his 2023 prompt list) and had a lot of fun. I wrote the posts by hand and am in the process of typing them up now. They’ll be posted daily at noon (KST) throughout the month of July.
